(Update: After Monday’s breeze show, Hip 40 is still my favorite of all my picks. Since Hip 5 is now out, I’ve added a new final pick, Hip 128, by More than Ready.)
While Fasig-Tipton’s The Gulfstream Sale doesn’t take place until Wednesday March 1, it’s time to get my selections out for Hips to Watch as the under tack show is Monday, Feb. 27. The buzz will really heat up this weekend leading into that breeze show, so let’s get right at it with the picks. And surely the easy picks will be the Uncle Mos, Tapits, Pioneerof the Niles, Into Mischiefs, etc. – I’m going to venture that there will be several of these in the upper echelons at the sale. What I’d like to do is present a few picks outside that group, but mostly in keeping with sires that we’ve seen to produce quality. I’ll throw in a few promising newcomers, too. We’ll see how these shake out come the breeze show and sale day.
These Hips to Watch are not arranged in any particular rank order:
Candy Ride always has a few top quality horses every year, and this year is no exception. Gun Runner is looking great, Mastery’s workout the other day really turned my head, and Unified returns today in the Gulfstream Park Sprint (G3). Lots of black type in this filly’s family; GSW dam is half to Graeme Hall, Harmony Lodge. I like how this filly walks; check her ThoroStride video here: http://thorostride.com/horse/fasig-tipton-florida-2017-hip-8
I like this filly for broodmare value alone. She’s a half to G1 winner Union Strike and full sister to MGSW Handsome Mike. And Scat Daddy progeny is becoming rarer due to that stallion’s untimely death. This filly should make a few short lists.
See her breeze video here:
I’d be remiss without a favorite Curlin, and this one has that sire plus a nice female line, to boot. The dam is a full sister to the talented but ill-fated Onlyforyou, by Malibu Moon. This is Dress the Part’s first foal. See this Curlin colt’s ThoroStride video here: http://thorostride.com/horse/fasig-tipton-florida-2017-hip-48
Dialed In had a bang-up first year at stud, finishing as the top freshman sire. Crupi’s New Castle Farm consigns this colt. Female line of Kentucky Derby (G1) winner and sire Monarchos.
From the Eddie Woods consignment, this colt showed me something at Monday’s breeze show. Very nice stride. Looks athletic and powerful. Definitely worth a look. Family of Miesque and Kingmambo. He breezed a strong 10.1:
It may be difficult to pick the most outstanding Shanghai Bobby individual at this sale, but I’ll venture a guess that Hip 30 from the family of Roman Ruler, Raised Socially, etc. might be worth a look.
Definitely a nice catalog at this year’s #FTGulfstream Sale! Lots of quality. There should be standouts by Smart Strike, Union Rags and Bernardini, too. Hope my 5 Hips to Watch are of interest and wishing everyone a successful sale!
