Sire Showcase #2: He’s Had Enough
(Read our first article in this series that reviews thoroughbred stallions at stud, from a pedigree and value perspective: Alpha Could Be The Stallion To Carry Bernardini’s Influence Forward.)
With the recent death of the top stallion Arch still fresh in our minds, it’s natural to want to dip into the deep well that is his potent bloodline and see if we can come up with another horse that could become a leading sire. Arch came from a terrific family; some might say he was from one of the top 2 or 3 families in the stud book, tracing to the great Broodmare of the Year, Courtly Dee. While Arch cannot be replaced, his powerful family lives on in a new stallion with first foals arriving this year. Tapit’s son He’s Had Enough, standing at Florida thoroughbred farm Woodford Thoroughbreds, offers breeders another opportunity to access the potent sire power of the Courtly Dee line.
A Deep Gene Pool That Delivers Sire Power
Woodford Thoroughbreds’ website mentions that there are 18 sires within He’s Had Enough’s family. Again and again Courtly Dee’s famous name can be found linked to some of the best sires and stakes winners of recent years. Arch, from her granddaughter Aurora, and also Green Desert, from her daughter, Foreign Courier, between them are responsible for over 150 stakes winners to date. Green Desert has gone on to become a great sire of sires, with Cape Cross, Oasis Dream and Invincible Spirit his best sire sons. Arch is also becoming a sire of sires, with Blame and Arch Arch Arch emerging as capable young stallions. In addition to those two, Bayern is another recent contributor to this bloodline; more on him in a moment.
Courtly Dee’s Three Daughters by Alydar
Last year Tom Hall wrote a terrific article in The Blood-Horse that categorized three top daughters of Courtly Dee and their progeny. Note that all three of these daughters of Courtly Dee are full sisters by Alydar. These three branches of her tree include He’s Had Enough’s granddam, Aquilegia (who also happens to be the granddam of Bayern). Aquilegia’s branch of the tree is responsible for 7 stakes winners so far, with 5 of them graded stakes winners. Aquilegia’s stakes winning Dixieland Band daughter Amelia, is the dam of grade 1 placed He’s Had Enough, who was second by a head to Shanghai Bobby in the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile (G1). He’s Had Enough earned more graded stakes black type when he finished third in a top three year old stakes race, the Robert B. Lewis Memorial S. (G2). When evaluating sire prospects, one likes to see a horse carry his graded form from two to three, as He’s Had Enough did.
Amelia, by Dixieland Band, adds another key component to He’s Had Enough’s pedigree. Dixieland Band is turning out to be a highly desirable broodmare sire of sires, already accounting for top sires Street Sense and First Samurai, and useful sires Limehouse, Pollard’s Vision, and Monarchos.
Add Tapit to This Terrific Family
Everyone is looking for the breakout sire son of Tapit, and there are several candidates to consider, including classic winning son Tonalist, champion son Hansen (although he has been exported there are some of his progeny here in the United States for breeders to review up close), plus other top sons Trappe Shot (already siring good horses), Tapiture, Constitution, Normandy Invasion, and others. I’m convinced that He’s Had Enough offers a distinct advantage to breeders: the power of Courtly Dee. This plus the sire prowess of Tapit is a terrific one-two punch.
Great Value & His First Crop Looks Amazing
What’s more, He’s Had Enough stands for much less than many other sons of Tapit – a very reasonable $5,000 stud fee. It is hard to find a stallion from this potent of a sire-making family, by the far and away leading sire these last two years, for a fee that really offers breeders a unique opportunity. It’s no wonder that my vote for Tapit’s top stallion son is He’s Had Enough. I’d put my money on Tapit crossed with the family of Courtly Dee any day. And as a big fan of Arch and Green Desert, I’ve already seen the sire power that Courtly Dee produces. He’s Had Enough has an excellent chance to succeed. Keep an eye on him. See He’s Had Enough’s first reported foal and read more about the excellent progeny he’s siring.
Bonus Recommendation: Woodford Thoroughbreds offers its Flex Plan with some excellent breeding incentives. Check out the incentives to He’s Had Enough here.
